The classic comedy "You Can't Take it With You" is back on Broadway for a limited run. This popular university/community theater staple returns with big name stars and a well oiled production.
James Earl Jones stars as Martin Vanderhof, the grounded and matter-of-fact patriarch of a seemingly dysfunctional family. One of the daughters (Rose Byrne making her fantastic Broadway debut) is asked for her hand by a scion of a wealthy family. When it comes to introducing her family to his "normal" family, hilarity ensues. Throw in IRS agents, a Russian ballet instructor and fireworks and you have a recipe for an evening of laughter. Kristine Nielsen, who I loved in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, makes a hilarious turn as the mother who always has a hobby. Also great was Annaleigh Ashford as the other daughter with ballet dancing dreams.
For anyone looking for a fun night and wanting something other than a musical, this is a great suggestion. Plus you get to see an American icon doing his craft live.
