Beyond the Streets

IMG_3098.jpg

Beyond the Streets is a huge exhibit on the history and social impact of graffiti. There is imagery from New York City and Los Angeles as well as memorabilia from the graffiti heyday. Anyone even remotely interested in street art would do themselves a favor in going to this expertly curated exhibit. Fans of hip hop will appreciate it as well as it touches on the relationship between the two art forms.

They also have a great gift shop!

The exhibit is located at 25 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and runs Through August 25th.

East Village graffiti

A few lucky concierges got to go out recently on a condensed tour of the East Village & Lower East Side given by Matt Levy of Levy's Unique New York Tours. Matt is a fantastic guide with tons of knowledge all about the great city of New York and all of it's boroughs.  He is especially tapped into the graffitti scene, it's history here and it's current stars.  I highly reccommend Matt as he keeps the tours going and is very engaing and full of great stories.  Following are somehilights from the tour, enjoy!

Transient

This huge mural is the only commissioned mural in Manhattan and changes every six months or so.  It is located on the Northwest corner of Houston and Bowery

These two (above and below) are both located on the Meisel Building at the corner of Bowery and Spring.  Orginally built as the Germania Bank at the cost of  $200,000 and was later bought by photographer Jay Maisel for $102,000 for the deal of the century.  He still resides there to this day.
